Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad on Thursday congratulated Barack Obama on his election win - the first time an Iranian leader has offered such wishes to a U.S. president-elect since the 1979 Islamic Revolution.

Ahmadinejad sent a message to Obama in which he congratulated the Democrat on attracting the majority of voters in the election.

GENEVA — A U.S. decision to bend policy and sit down with Iran at nuclear talks fizzled Saturday, with Iran stonewalling Washington and five other world powers on their call to freeze uranium enrichment.

In response, the six gave Iran two weeks to respond to their demand, setting the stage for a new round of U.N. sanctions.

Iran's refusal to consider suspending enrichment was an indirect slap at the United States, which had sent Undersecretary of State William Burns to the talks in hopes the first-time American presence would encourage Tehran into making concessions.

Officials and diplomats refused to characterize the timeframe as an ultimatum, but it appeared clear that Iran now has a de-facto deadline to show flexibility.

Iran Pressuring Iraq to Boot US Troops?

I get the feeling that al-Maliki is being pressured by the Iranians (at the direction of Russia) to push the U.S. troops out of Iraq, by saying they are not needed there anymore. Iran is at a tactical disadvantage if the USA is still in Iraq, because they will be surrounded.

This is for my former military buddies - Why would Iran put their new Billion dollar NPP in such a vulnerable spot, right on their western coast? Could it be a decoy or trap? Notice how the power plants are strategically placed in a row? Their goal is to draw in an aeriel attack into Bushehr and then unload massive anti-aircraft attacks from that line of attack. How many of these other power plants are decoys?????

Mysterious explosion at Iranian military facility

DEBKAfile’s Iranian sources report that an explosion Monday, June 30, at Bidganeh near the town of Shahriar 40 kilometers east of Tehran occurred at a military installation, not a civilian building as Tehran claimed.

At first, the Iranian authorities reported 15 people were killed, correcting this later to no casualties. The precise function of the targeted facility is not known. While Iran claimed the blast was caused by a gas leak, Western military sources are skeptical and believe the authorities are trying to cover up some sort of sabotage.
